DESCRIPTION

A large colour lithograph by Joan Miró (1893–1983), made in 1964. The composition is built around the artist’s own name, written in broad, calligraphic black strokes that run down the centre of the sheet. Around it Miró scatters his essential vocabulary: a red sun inside a black circle, small black stars, splashes of green and blue, and generous bands of red, yellow and blue. A border of black dots frames the whole image like a constellation. The 1960s were among the most intense years of Miró’s printmaking. Working with the great Parisian print workshops, he treated lithography not as a means of reproduction but as a medium in its own right, keeping the energy of the brush, the texture of the ink and the spontaneity of the gesture. In this sheet the name becomes image: the letters are drawn with the same freedom as the signs and stars around them. The lithograph, measuring 100 × 70 cm, is presented in a light wood frame.
