Born in Barcelona, Miró built a vocabulary of stars, birds, ladders and biomorphic signs that resists every movement he was associated with. He passed through Paris surrealism without ever submitting to its programme, keeping instead a direct line to Catalan folk art and the landscape of Mont-roig.
His work moved freely across painting, works on paper, sculpture, ceramics and monumental public commissions. The collaboration with the ceramicist Josep Llorens Artigas, sustained over decades, produced murals for UNESCO in Paris and Harvard University. He worked between Catalonia, Paris and Mallorca, where he died in 1983.
