1950-
Born in Philadelphia, McCurry has photographed conflict and daily life across South and Central Asia for more than four decades. He crossed into rebel-held Afghanistan in 1979 with rolls of film sewn into his clothes, and the images that resulted established his career.
His work is defined by saturated colour and by the direct portrait, most famously the Afghan girl photographed in a Peshawar refugee camp in 1984. A member of Magnum Photos for many years, he continues to work internationally.
