1904-1989
Born in Figueres, Dalí brought an academic painter’s technique to imagery drawn from dream, obsession and psychoanalysis. His paranoiac-critical method — the deliberate cultivation of double images and delirious associations — made him the most publicly visible surrealist and, eventually, the reason for his expulsion from the group.
Beyond the canvases, he worked in film with Buñuel, in jewellery, in stage design, and in graphic editions produced throughout the sixties and seventies. He returned to Catalonia in his later years and died in Figueres, where his museum-theatre remains.
