1947-2015
Born Salvatore Mangione in Leonforte, Sicily, Salvo emerged in the late sixties within the circle around Arte Povera, working in photography and conceptual pieces. Around 1973 he made an abrupt and, at the time, scandalous return to painting.
What he painted were landscapes: roads, towers, cypresses and small towns under skies of acid green, violet and orange. The reference is Italian trecento painting and de Chirico, filtered through colour that belongs to no observed hour of the day. He died in Turin in 2015.
