Untitled (1994) was painted in the final year of Sam Francis’s life, at his West Channel Road studio in Santa Monica. A dense orange mass, flooded with pooling greens, occupies the upper two-thirds of the vertical canvas; below, a diagonal red stroke cuts through a field of blue and green, and the paint runs and drips toward the lower edge.
The scale is intimate, but the handling is not. Francis worked these late canvases flat, pouring and dripping directly onto the surface and allowing gravity, viscosity and the collision of wet pigment to complete what he had begun.
Francis treated colour as an autonomous, physical presence rather than a descriptive tool. Here the orange does not sit on the canvas; it spreads across it, its edges determined by flow rather than by drawing.
The white ground remains active throughout — visible at the edges and in small breaches within the poured fields. Francis consistently described emptiness as generative rather than absent, a position formed partly through his long engagement with Japanese aesthetics and Zen thought during his years in Tokyo.
The photographs of the West Channel Road studio taken in 1994 show hundreds of these small canvases covering every wall. Francis, by then seriously ill, worked at a sustained pace on works of this format until shortly before his death in November of that year.
The late paintings are among the most concentrated of his career. Their compression is not a diminution: as he put it, the viewer’s response is not dictated by the time spent on a work or by its size, but by the experience the painting embodies.
The signature is stamped by the artist’s estate. Inscribed verso: SFP94-137.
This work is documented, with photographs of it in the course of execution and installed in the artist’s studio, in Debra Burchett-Lere and Aneta Zebala, Sam Francis: The Artist’s Materials (Getty Conservation Institute).
