1957-
Born in Felanitx, Mallorca, Barceló emerged in the early eighties with a dense, heavily worked surface that owed as much to organic matter as to paint. Long periods spent in Mali from 1988 onward introduced pigment mixed with earth, termite activity and the erosion of the Sahel into his practice.
His subjects circle around still life, the sea, bullfighting and the library. Beyond painting he has worked extensively in ceramics and produced the vaulted ceiling of the Human Rights Chamber at the United Nations in Geneva. He divides his time between Mallorca, Paris and Mali.
