PROVENANCE
Primavera (2005) is a mature example of Salvo’s landscape painting, the genre to which he devoted himself from the mid-1970s until the end of his life. A grove of trees occupies the foreground — umbrella pines, palms, a cypress, a flowering almond, a prickly pear — arranged against a strip of blue sea and a sky of rounded white cloud.
The palette is deliberately artificial. Trunks are painted in pink, orange and violet; the grass is a flat acid green; shadows fall as bands of deep blue. Nothing is observed from nature in the conventional sense, yet everything is recognisably Mediterranean.
Salvo began in the orbit of Arte Povera, exhibiting alongside Boetti, Zorio and Penone, and working with photography, text and self-portraiture. His decision around 1973 to return to easel painting — and specifically to landscape, the most traditional of genres — was received at the time as a provocation.
It was a considered position rather than a retreat. Salvo took up the conventions of Italian painting from Giotto to the metaphysical school and applied them without irony, treating the landscape as a form still capable of being renewed.
The paintings are constructed around a strong, unnatural light that flattens volume and casts long chromatic shadows. Human figures are absent. Time is suspended.
Primavera belongs to a sequence of seasonal subjects Salvo painted repeatedly, each treating the same motif under a different key of colour. The result sits between memory and invention: a Sicily recalled rather than recorded.
