Shaolin Monks Running on Wall was made during Steve McCurry’s work at the Shaolin Monastery in Henan Province, China, where he documented the training of young monks in the martial disciplines associated with the temple. The photograph captures a monk mid-flight, body horizontal against a weathered wall, having run several steps up its surface before pushing off.
The image is built on contrast: the saturated orange of the robes against the ochre and grey of the wall, the suspended figure against the seated group below, the extreme physical effort against the relaxed posture of those watching.
The photograph is composed around a single unrepeatable moment, but McCurry surrounds it with stillness. Five monks sit at the base of the wall, some watching, others turned away. A further figure appears in the distance, upside down against the wall’s far end.
In the immediate foreground, out of focus, the back of a head interrupts the lower left corner — a compositional decision that places the viewer within the courtyard rather than outside it, watching alongside the others.
The Shaolin Monastery, founded in the fifth century, has become synonymous with the development of Chinese martial arts. The training regime documented here begins in childhood and combines physical discipline with Buddhist practice.
McCurry’s photographs from the monastery avoid the register of martial spectacle. The emphasis falls instead on repetition, routine and the ordinary texture of an extraordinary discipline — the wall itself, cracked and stained, is as much the subject as the figure crossing it.
