Rabari tribal elder

Rabari Tribal Elder is a frontal portrait made in Rajasthan in 2010. The sitter, a member of the Rabari community, faces the camera directly against a bare, mottled wall, his hair and beard dyed a deep saffron orange with henna, his forehead marked with sandalwood paste.

The photograph belongs to McCurry’s extended body of portraiture, in which a single figure is set against a neutral ground and given the full weight of the frame. There is no narrative context, no gesture, no action — only the face and the gaze.

The Portrait Tradition

McCurry’s portraits work through directness. The subject looks into the lens; the encounter is acknowledged rather than concealed. Here the elder’s expression is composed and unhurried, the eyes holding the centre of the image.

Detail accumulates in the lower half of the frame: layered strings of beads, small metal charms, a photographic amulet worn at the chest. These are not arranged for the camera but belong to the man, and they carry as much information as the face above them.

Colour and Ground

The saffron of the hair against the grey-brown of the weathered wall gives the photograph its structure. The wall itself, stained and patched, provides a textured neutral field of the kind McCurry has consistently sought out for portrait work — a surface with history but without distraction.

The Rabari

The Rabari are a pastoral community distributed across Rajasthan and Gujarat, historically nomadic, with distinctive traditions of dress and personal adornment. McCurry has photographed among them across several visits.
