PROVENANCE
Figura femenina (1950) dates from Eduardo Chillida’s Paris years, the period immediately after he abandoned his architecture studies in Madrid and moved to France to devote himself to art. The drawing precedes his turn to iron and to the abstract vocabulary for which he is known, and belongs instead to a brief, concentrated phase of work from the figure.
A single continuous pencil line describes a reclining female form, the body folded, the head lowered toward the arms. There is no shading and no correction. The contour carries the entire weight of the image.
Chillida arrived in Paris in 1948 and worked initially in plaster, drawing constantly from the classical sculpture in the Louvre. These figure studies were not exercises in likeness but investigations into volume — how a body occupies space, and how a line can enclose it.
The lesson carried directly into the sculpture that followed. When Chillida returned to the Basque Country in 1951 and began working in forged iron, the concern remained the same: the boundary between mass and the space around it.
The drawing’s restraint is its subject. A single unbroken stroke establishes back, shoulder and thigh; a small closed curve at the lower left completes the head. What is not drawn — the interior of the figure, the ground it rests on — is left entirely to the paper.
This treatment of blank space as active rather than empty would become the governing principle of Chillida’s mature work, and it is already fully present in a sheet made at twenty-six.
