1945-
Born in Dublin and raised in London, Scully has worked for five decades within a vocabulary of stripes, blocks and bands. What could be a system is instead handled as a painter’s problem: edges left soft, layers showing through, colour arrived at by adjustment rather than plan.
He moved to the United States in 1975, and the work loosened there. The stacked and inset panels of the eighties gave way to the Wall of Light series, drawn from Mayan stonework seen in Mexico. He works between New York, Bavaria and Barcelona.
