1923-2012
Born in Kansas City, Jenkins came out of the second generation of American abstract expressionists but moved quickly away from gesture. From the early sixties he poured thinned acrylic across canvases he tilted and manipulated, guiding the flow with an ivory knife rather than a brush.
The results are veils of translucent colour that overlap without mixing, closer to stained glass or geology than to painting as it was practised around him. He titled almost everything Phenomena. He worked between New York and Paris and died in New York in 2012.
