Born in Barcelona, Plensa works across sculpture, drawing, installation and stage design, with the human figure and language at the centre. Bodies are built from letters and characters drawn from multiple alphabets; heads are elongated, closed-eyed, cast in resin, marble or steel mesh.
His public works stand in Chicago, London, Tokyo, Nice and Calgary. The scale is monumental but the register is interior, closer to portraiture than to civic sculpture. He continues to work from Barcelona.
